There was a time (and it was not the first!), some 14 years ago, when the name Carl Machover was mentioned in a conference Programme Committee meeting. "Let us invite Carl Machover", someone said, "he will pull in the crowds". Invite Carl Machover to your conference and success is ensured. And indeed Carl was invited, the crowds came, the conference was a success. Carl Machover, the name.
But there is more. Carl Machover has become a familiar figure at Eurographics conferences. Over the years his involvement has increased. In 1996 Carl gave two full day tutorials, CAD/CAM What do we do now?, Using Virtual Reality in Science, Engineering and Manufacturing, chaired a panel session on Virtual Reality in Engineering, and was a member of a panel on Art and Culture in Virtual Reality. Involvement increasing with age!
Carl Machover the person. A man of charm, wit, integrity and authority. His words carry weight; the weight that comes from a lifetime of experience and reflection. He has an eye for detail and illustration through the carefully selected example. He is also a man of vision and foresight. His lectures are always a careful balance of reflection on the past, experience of the present and vision for the future. The Eurographics Association's Constitution defines several categories of membership. Most are open to all, but one can only be attained by election. That category of membership is awarded to individuals who have given exemplary service to the Association or have made significant personal contributions to the field of computer graphics.
Carl Machover meets the criteria on both counts, and so it was that in December 1996, the Fellows of the Eurographics Association elected Carl Machover to their number. And what better day and occasion than this to inform Carl of his election and bestow upon him Fellowship of the Association. May this be a symbol of the esteem in which Carl is held amongst researchers and practioners alike throughout Europe and of the esteem in which Carl is held by the Eurographics Association, Fellows, Officers and Members. And may we look forward to your continued presence among us, Carl, at Eurographics conferences and events for many years to come.
