NEW EG FELLOWS 2025
In May 2025 the Fellows of the Association made a proposal to the Executive Committee that two new Fellows be elected. The proposal was accepted. The new Fellows are Ayellet Tal and Karol Myszkowski. The contributions which they have made to computer graphics and to EUROGRAPHICS are outlined below together with the reasons for their election. Congratulations to both of them!
AYELLET TAL
Ayellet Tal is a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology. She earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science at Tel Aviv University (1986, 1989) and completed her Ph.D. in Computer Science at Princeton University in 1995. Ayellet has worked extensively in computer graphics, geometry processing and computer vision and made numerous longstanding contributions to the field of visual computing. Her research addresses core problems such as 3D shape segmentation, shape analysis and visual, expertly combining theoretical rigor with practical applications. In addition to her foundational work in computer graphics and geometry processing, Ayellet has developed a prominent interdisciplinary collaboration with archaeologists, creating computational methods that support the analysis and interpretation of cultural heritage data. Ayellet’s seminal SIGGRAPH 2003 paper was the first to propose a computational framework for segmenting 3D shapes based on human perception, proposing a novel computational approach and quality measure for shape segmentation, with numerous follow-ups. In the past two decades, Ayellet’s research tackled context-aware approaches to visual saliency, point set surface visibility, shape illustration, machine learning-based methods for 3D data analysis. Her publications are widely cited, and her contributions have a lasting impact on how visual data is analyzed and understood in both academic and applied settings. Ayellet’s work has been recognized with multiple awards, including best paper awards and faculty awards for excellence in research. Ayellet’s contributions to the scientific community span extensive service activities, such as program committee chairing and membership, most recently as technical program co-chair of ICCV 2025. In addition to her scientific work, Ayellet Tal has been actively engaged in institutional and national efforts to support diversity in science and engineering. She has served as an advisor to the President of the Technion on gender equity and co-founded a non-profit organization that promotes the participation of underrepresented groups in STEM fields. These efforts reflect her broader commitment to creating a more inclusive academic environment. Through her research, mentorship, and leadership, she has contributed significantly to the scientific community in Israel and internationally. Ayellet Tal was elected to a Fellowship of the Association in recognition of: – Her highly impactful research on shape segmentation, visual saliency, shape analysis and significant interdisciplinary contributions in visual computing tools for archeological research. – Her contributions to EUROGRAPHICS and Eurographics events as author and IPC member, serving on the editorial board of the Eurographics journal Computer Graphics Forum (CGF), and her role-model contributions to promoting diversity and equity in STEM.
KAROL MYSZKOWSKI
Karol is one of the early key contributors to HDR imaging, developing several perception-inspired tone- mapping operators, including the widely used adaptive logarithmic [EG23] and contrast domain [ACMTAP06] methods. Karol was a pioneer in HDR video compression, developing HDR signal encoding based on contrast sensitivity data [SIG04], a methodology later adopted in the Dolby Vision standard. In another groundbreaking contribution, he introduced a backward-compatible HDR video encoding method that allowed storing both original low dynamic range (LDR) movies and their HDR version [SIG06], a technology later licensed by Dolby. Karol conducted pioneering work in HDR image quality evaluation. Building on his experience with the Visual Difference Predictor (VDP) for guiding efficient rendering [EGSR98, EGSR99, TOG00, SIG01], he introduced HDR-VDP [IEEECSMC04, SPIE-HVEI05] as part of Rafal Mantiuk’s PhD research. Rafal further refined this metric, which is now widely used as HDR-VDP2. Karol also introduced the first image quality metric that is independent of dynamic range, enabling direct comparison between HDR and LDR image pairs [SIG08]. All those achievements are encapsulated in a co-authored HDR textbook, now a standard reference in the field with over 2,700 citations. Karol also developed the first HDR video [SIGA10], light-field quality metrics [CVPR17], and early learning-based metrics [EG12, TOG18]. Karol also proposed perceptual metrics and models guiding disparity processing in stereoscopic displays [SIG11, SIG12, 2xSIGA12, SIGA16, SIG22] and foveated rendering [SIG16, SIG17, SIG19]. His interest in display technology extends to eye accommodation [IEEEVR17, Best Paper Award; Jap. Dig. Cont. Assoc. Award at SIGGRAPH 2017 Emerging Technologies], motion reproduction without judder/flicker/blur [SIGA21], and the fidelity of material appearance in 3D printing [SIGA17, SIG19, EG21] and their digital twins [EG06, SIG18, SIG21, SIGA22, SIGA23]. A key aspect of all the contributions mentioned above is the blend of a solid perceptual foundation with a focus on solving practical, real-world problems. It is fair to say that Karol’s work in these areas is foundational, shaping much of the current perception research in graphics. Notably, Karol has maintained a strong and consistent presence in Eurographics/CGF with 39 papers, closely matching his impressive output in ACM SIGGRAPH/Asia/TOG, where he has published 40 papers. Karol has had a profound impact as an educator and a supervisor of PhD students and postdocs. Originally from Poland, he has actively supported research in Eastern Europe, welcoming many researchers from the region into his group and later promoting them to academic positions. Karol is renowed for his dedicated service to the graphics community. He has served on the editorial boards of ACM TOG, IEEE TVCG, ACM TAP, and CGF. He chaired SIGGRAPH Asia 2020 and co-chaired Eurographics 2023, Chinese CAD/CG 2019, Graphicon 2012, ACM SAP 2008, SCCG 2008, and EGSR 2001. Additionally, he co-organized EGSR 2010 and has contributed to numerous conference program committees, including ACM SIGGRAPH/Asia, Eurographics, and EGSR.
